| Obverse description | Laureate bust of Emperor Hadrian facing right, with short beard rendered in the Hellenistic philhellene style fashionable during his reign. The effigy displays the emperor's characteristic broad facial features and curled hair beneath the laurel wreath. The encircling Latin legend reads HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait is executed in high relief with fine engraving typical of the Roman Imperial mint at its peak under Hadrian. The flan is irregularly shaped, as is characteristic of hammered silver coinage of the period. |
