背面描述 Standing figure of Virtus, the personification of Roman martial valor, depicted facing left in military attire including a helmet and short tunic. She holds a parazonium (short sword) in her left hand and rests a spear or hasta in her right, with a round shield visible to the left of the figure near the field. The reverse legend COS III appears in the field flanking the figure, referencing Hadrian's third consulship held in AD 119 and serving as the principal dating element for this issue. A dotted border frames the reverse design, consistent with Rome Mint production of this period.

附加信息

Hadrian's third consulship, held from 119 AD onward as a permanent honorific, provided the dating anchor for a vast coinage program that coincided with his extensive provincial tours. The Virtus type fits within a broader pattern of personification reverses Hadrian deployed deliberately — less to celebrate military victory, which he generally avoided, than to project ideological stability after Trajan's aggressive expansionism had strained the empire's eastern frontier.

RIC II.3 860 is part of the revised Spink corpus that substantially reorganized and renumbered Hadrian's denarii from the older RIC II, making older auction references unreliable without cross-checking OCRE.
