Hadrian's third consulship began in 119 AD and was held without renewal — the COS III designation on coins struck through the mid-120s simply continued as a dating marker rather than signaling a new magistracy. These pieces belong to a period of sustained mint activity at Rome when Hadrian was conducting his first great tour of the provinces, meaning the emperor himself was absent from the city whose workshops were striking his image.
RIC II.3 #717 reflects the substantial revision of Hadrian's coinage undertaken in the 2009 supplement, which reorganized and renumbered hundreds of types from the original Mattingly-Sydenham volume.
