正面描述 Bare-shouldered, laureate bust of the emperor Hadrian facing right, rendered with characteristic realism including a short curled beard — the first Roman emperor to be depicted habitually bearded on coinage. The portrait displays finely engraved hair arranged in layered locks beneath the laurel wreath, with drapery visible at the truncation. The Latin legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS encircles the effigy along the coin's periphery, reading clockwise from the lower left. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hand-hammered production at the Rome mint.

附加信息

The COS III designation dates this issue to Hadrian's third consulship, held continuously from 119 AD onward as an honorific rather than an active magistracy. These years coincide with Hadrian's extensive provincial tours — the most ambitious program of imperial travel undertaken by any Roman emperor — during which the mint at Rome operated largely without his physical presence. The coinage of this period was produced in enormous volume to fund the movements of the imperial retinue and the construction projects Hadrian initiated across the provinces, including the early phases of his wall in Britain.
