This issue belongs to Hadrian's celebrated series of "travel coins" — provincial personifications struck in the early 130s to commemorate his extraordinary tours of the empire's territories. Hadrian visited North Africa in 128 AD, reportedly personally supervising the distribution of grain relief to regions suffering from prolonged drought. The Africa type is among the more frequently encountered in the series, yet surviving examples with crisp reverse detail are genuinely uncommon given the fine engraving demanded by the type.
