| Beschrijving keerzijde | The personification of Aegyptos (Egypt) reclines left, wearing a helmet and draped garments, her body supported on the ground in a pose evoking a resting river deity. In her raised right hand she holds a sistrum, the sacred rattle associated with the cult of Isis, which identifies her Egyptian character. To her lower left, an ibis stands facing left, the sacred bird of the god Thoth and an emblematic symbol of Egypt. To her right, a basket (possibly a modius or cista) rests in the field. The composition belongs to Hadrian's celebrated series of provincial personification reverses, commemorating his imperial travels. The legend AEGYPTOS is inscribed in the upper field. |
