Galba's reign lasted seven months. Struck in the chaotic interval between Nero's suicide in June 68 AD and Galba's own murder by the Praetorian Guard in January 69, this denarius belongs to one of the most compressed and violent succession crises in Roman history — the Year of the Four Emperors. Galba minted aggressively to pay his troops, yet his refusal to award the customary donative to the Guard who had declared for him sealed his fate.
RIC I#39 is among the issues produced at the Gallic mint, almost certainly Narbo or Lugdunum, before Galba reached Rome.
