Flanking the arch on each side stands a military trophy composed of captured arms and armour, at the base of each of which crouches a bound barbarian captive, symbolising the subjugation of the Germanic tribes. The composition is bold and architecturally precise, conveying the grandeur of Rome's commemorative monuments.
