Domitian's seventh tribunician consulship coinage dates to the final months of 81 AD, a period of acute political transition following Titus's death in September of that year. Domitian assumed power almost immediately, and the rapid succession of consular and tribunician titles visible across his early coinage reflects a calculated effort to establish dynastic continuity — and personal authority — through sheer volume of titulature. The designation DES VIII, looking ahead to the following year's consulship, places this issue within the first weeks of his reign.
