Struck in 81 AD during Domitian's first year as emperor, following the death of his brother Titus in September of that year. The tribunician and consular dating in the title — TR P COS VII DES VIII — places this issue precisely within the transitional months before Domitian assumed his eighth consulship, making it a product of the very opening weeks of a reign that would last fifteen years and end in assassination.
RIC II.1 #41 is not a rare type, but the early regnal dating gives it documentary value that later Domitianic issues lack.
