| Opschrift voorzijde | IMP CAES DOMITIAN AVG PONT (Translation: Supreme commander, Caesar, Domitian, emperor, [high] priest.) |
| Beschrijving keerzijde | A dolphin, depicted in sinuous coiled form, is entwined around an anchor set vertically in the field, a device symbolising the Augustan motto festina lente (make haste slowly) and evoking imperial stability and sea power. The reverse type is rendered with crisp detail despite moderate surface wear, with the dolphin's body curving gracefully around the shaft of the anchor. The encircling legend TR P COS VII DES VIII P P is distributed around the periphery, identifying Domitian's tribunician power and consular honours. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, as is characteristic of hand-struck Roman denarii of this period. The field is smooth with minor die wear evident. |
