Her left arm rests upon a tall column for support, while her right hand extends forward holding a serpent, which she feeds from a patera held in her left hand. The allegorical composition evokes themes of health, welfare, and divine protection over the Roman state and its youth. The reverse legend PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS curves around the upper field, identifying Domitian in his capacity as Prince of the Youth, a title traditionally conferred upon heirs apparent within the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties. |
