She rests in a dejected, submissive posture with her right hand raised to her head in a gesture of mourning or defeat. A broken spear lies diagonally beneath the shield in the exergual area, symbolising military conquest. The reverse legend encircles the design and records Domitian's imperial titles, celebrating Roman victory over the Germanic tribes. The composition closely follows the iconographic type established for the series commemorating Domitian's German campaigns. |
