The reverse legend on this issue — S P Q R PP OB CS — records the Senate and Roman People honoring Claudius as Pater Patriae and for Ob Cives Servatos, "having saved the citizens," a distinction rooted in the old Republican corona civica tradition awarded to soldiers who saved a fellow Roman in battle. Claudius appropriated the civic crown rhetoric politically, aligning his principate with notions of civil protection rather than military conquest — pointed, given his actual military campaigns in Britain beginning in 43 AD.
