Brutus struck this issue in the field during his Macedonian campaign, with Marcus Servilius serving as his legate — an appointment that placed coin production directly under military command rather than any civilian authority. The naming of both commander and subordinate officer on the same denarius was a deliberate assertion of legitimate imperatorship, Brutus working hard to project constitutional normalcy even as he prepared to fight Octavian and Antony for control of the Roman world.
The series was produced in the months leading to Philippi, October 42 BC, where Brutus died. Crawford dates the issue to the Macedonian mint.
