| Reverse description | A lion passant sinister — walking left — occupies the central field, rendered with vigorous musculature and a prominent mane; the tail is raised and curled over the back. The lion carries a thunderbolt in its jaws, symbolising martial prowess and divine sanction. A ground line runs beneath the figure, below which the exergual mint mark RSR appears. The surrounding legend VIRTVS AVG encircles the upper field, invoking the virtue and military valor of the Augustus. The type is closely associated with the early coinage of Carausius and reflects his effort to legitimize his rule through traditional Roman imperial iconography. |
