Struck in the field by Brutus's mobile mint during his campaign in Macedonia and Thrace, this denarius was produced less than two years after the Ides of March. The "IMP" title reflects an acclamation Brutus received following military actions in Lycia — a commander saluted by his troops, not appointed by Rome. His forces were paid with coins like this one before Philippi in 42 BC, where both he and Cassius died. The mint never had a fixed location; it moved with the army.
