Struck in the dying months of Nero's reign or immediately after his suicide in June 68 AD, this denarius belongs to the chaotic interregnum now called the Year of the Four Emperors. The mint attribution remains contested — RIC assigns it to an uncertain mint, possibly Lugdunum, operating under the authority of Galba during his march on Rome. Within roughly eighteen months of this coin's production, three emperors would be dead by violence or suicide.
