Additional information

This denarius belongs to the series issued under the moneyer P. Petronius Turpilianus, one of the tresviri monetales — junior magistrates responsible for coinage production under Augustus. The office was ancient in origin but increasingly ceremonial by this period; Augustus had effectively centralized monetary policy, and the moneyers' names appearing on coins were as much a nod to Republican tradition as they were a reflection of actual administrative authority.

The TVRPILIANVS issues fall within a phase when Augustan monetary reform was still consolidating after the chaos of the civil war decades.
