He holds a legionary eagle (aquila) in his right hand and a military standard (vexillum) in his left, referencing the recovery of the Roman standards lost to the Parthians at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC. The legend SIGNIS RECEPTIS is inscribed in the field, commemorating this diplomatic triumph of Augustus. The composition is bold and hieratic, consistent with the propagandistic numismatic programme of the early Principate. |
