The legend reads SIGNIS / PARTHICIS / RECEPTIS in three registers, commemorating the diplomatic recovery of the Roman standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC and subsequently returned by the Parthian king Phraates IV. No figural imagery accompanies the text; the inscription alone serves as the celebratory monument. The lettering is deeply incised and slightly irregular in alignment, consistent with the hand-engraved dies of the period. |
