The SIGNIS PARTHICIS RECEPTIS issues commemorate Augustus's diplomatic recovery of the legionary standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC and by Antony in subsequent Parthian campaigns — a humiliation Rome had nursed for three decades. Augustus achieved the return through negotiation with Phraates IV in 19 BC, not military conquest, but the propaganda machine rendered it as a triumph regardless. The standards were housed in the Temple of Mars Ultor, and the event was treated as one of the defining achievements of the new regime.
