This issue belongs to a series struck around the time of Augustus's return from the eastern provinces in 19 BC, when the senate voted him extraordinary honors including the right to repair public roads at his own expense — the QVOD VIAE MVN SVNT legend directly records that act of civic munificence. Road restoration was politically calculated: Augustus used it to bind the Italian peninsula to his administration while simultaneously projecting the image of a ruler who governed through benefaction rather than force.
RIC I 145 is among the better-documented types from the Lugdunum mint's early output under the reformed Augustan coinage system established after 15 BC reorganization.
