Within the intercolumniation, the armoured figure of Mars stands facing, holding a spear and a standard (or vexillum), flanked by additional figures in the outer bays. The legend MART VLT appears in the exergue in Latin capitals, serving as a dedicatory inscription to Mars the Avenger. The architectural rendering celebrates Augustus's vow to build the Temple of Mars Ultor in fulfilment of his oath made before the Battle of Philippi. |
