M. Durmius served as one of the tresviri monetales — the three-man college of mint magistrates — under Augustus, a position that by the late first century BC had become largely ceremonial but still conferred real prestige. The office predated the Republic's end and Augustus retained it deliberately, one of dozens of calculated gestures toward restored constitutional normalcy. Durmius is otherwise obscure; no literary source preserves him, and his name survives almost entirely through this coinage.
The broad date range assigned to this issue reflects ongoing uncertainty about when exactly the tresviri monetales ceased producing coins under their own names — a practice Augustus quietly discontinued sometime in the first decade AD.
