Additional information

This issue belongs to a group of denarii struck in 16 BC under the moneyer L. Mescinius Rufus, one of the tresviri monetales appointed annually to oversee Rome's mint. The reverse type — Mars advancing — was politically loaded that year: Augustus had recently returned military standards lost at Carrhae in 53 BC to Roman hands via diplomacy with Parthia, a settlement his propagandists aggressively framed as martial victory. The S P Q R V PR RE CAES legend, abbreviating a senatorial vow for the preservation of the emperor, ties this coin directly to that manufactured triumph.
