| Obverse description | Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in the classical Roman portrait style with neatly combed hair swept forward across the brow. The effigy displays fine die-engraving characteristic of the Augustan monetary reform period. The legend AVGVSTVS appears in the field or along the periphery in Latin capitals. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hand-struck Roman silver coinage of this era. |

| Additional information |
Lucius Caninius Gallus served as one of the tresviri monetales — the board of three magistrates overseeing the mint — almost certainly in 12 BC, the same year Augustus assumed the office of Pontifex Maximus following the death of Lepidus. The moneyers of this period retained nominal credit on coinage despite Augustus having centralized effective control of the mint decades earlier; their names appear more as administrative record than as any reflection of personal authority.
RIC I 418 is a relatively scarce type within the Augustan series.
