Additional information

This denarius belongs to the Spanish mint series — almost certainly Colonia Caesar Augusta (modern Zaragoza) — struck during Augustus's extended stay in the western provinces from 27 to 24 BC and again around 19 BC, when he personally supervised military campaigns and administrative reforms in Hispania and Gaul. The Jupiter type fits a broader Augustan program of linking the princeps to divine authority without the direct self-deification that had proved fatal for Caesar.

RIC I 64 is a relatively scarce emission within the Spanish group.
