Additional information

This issue belongs to a significant series struck under Augustus that honored the deified Julius Caesar — a politically calculated act, since Augustus's legitimacy rested substantially on his adoption by Caesar and the subsequent Senate vote deifying him in 42 BC. By continuing to mint coins invoking DIVVS IVLIVS nearly two decades after that deification, Augustus kept the divine connection fresh, particularly as he was consolidating power following the final defeat of Antony and Cleopatra. The Spanish mint at Colonia Patricia is the most widely accepted production site for RIC 38A.
