The ARMEN RECE legend — abbreviating Armenia recepta — commemorates Augustus's diplomatic resolution of the Armenian succession crisis in 19 BC, when he installed Tigranes II without a single Roman soldier crossing into battle. It was a calculated piece of political theater: the Senate awarded him the honors of a triumph, which he refused, accepting instead the lesser ovatio.
