The ARMEN CAPTA ("Armenia captured") types were struck to commemorate Augustus's diplomatic coup of 20 BC, when Tiberius retrieved the Roman standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC and installed Tigranes II as a client king in Armenia — a political settlement dressed up in the language of military conquest. Augustus never set foot in the region. The IMP VIIII salutation, his ninth imperatorial acclamation, dates the emission tightly to 19–18 BC and was almost certainly struck at the Brundisium or Rome mint under the travelling authority of the emperor.
