Issued under the moneyer Gaius Antistius Vetus, one of the tresviri monetales appointed annually to oversee Rome's coinage, this denarius invokes Apollo Actius — the god to whom Augustus attributed his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The association was politically deliberate: Augustus rebuilt and expanded the temple of Apollo on the Actian promontory and established quadrennial games there, folding his military triumph into a religious narrative that would outlast any single monument.
The Antistii were a respected plebeian family with consular history; Gaius Antistius Vetus himself reached the consulship in 6 BC.
