背面描述 Jupiter standing in a quadriga galloping to the left, his body turned toward the viewer, right arm raised and brandishing a thunderbolt while holding a sceptre in his left hand. The four horses are rendered in energetic, overlapping relief, their manes and musculature finely detailed in the late Republican tradition. A scorpion appears beneath the horses in the exergual area, serving as a variety marker distinguishing RRC 422/1b from the scorpion-less 422/1a. The encircling legend P HVPSEVS AED CVR identifies the co-issuing magistrate Publius Plautius Hypsaeus, while CAPTVM C HVPSAE COS PREIVER in the exergue references the earlier capture of Privernum by the consul Gaius Hypsaeus, evoking ancestral gloria to legitimize the issue.

附加信息

Issued jointly by Marcus Aemilius Scaurus and Publius Plautius Hypsaeus as moneyers, this denarius was struck the same year Scaurus's father — the notorious princeps senatus of the same name — was put on trial for extortion following his governorship of Sardinia. The younger Scaurus would later face identical charges for his own conduct in Sardinia, suggesting the family's reputation for provincial exploitation was well earned. Hypsaeus, meanwhile, was a client of Pompey and would be condemned in 52 BC under the lex Pompeia de vi.
