Minted by Manlius Aemilius Lepidus in the years immediately following Rome's catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Noreia, where the Cimbri annihilated a consular army under Gnaeus Papirius Carbo, this issue reflects a Republic under acute military pressure on its northern frontiers. The moneyer's choice of ancestry for the coin's imagery was deliberate self-promotion — the Aemilii Lepidi were among Rome's most politically aggressive families, and the moneyer's position guaranteed a degree of propagandistic latitude.
RRC 291/1 is catalogued as a single-type issue within a tight production window, consistent with the annual moneyer rotation system of the late Republic.
