The Baskunes were a Vasconian people of the upper Ebro basin, and their coinage — struck at a mint tentatively identified as Pamplona — belongs to the broad wave of Iberian imitative silver that proliferated after Roman military presence in Hispania created demand for local currency capable of paying troops and settling markets. The legends on these coins are written in Iberian script, making Baskunes issues among the relatively few pre-Roman coinages from the region with a legible ethnic attribution. Production likely ceased as Roman monetary integration tightened in the early first century BC.
