Obverse description Central field occupied by a quartered heraldic shield divided by a plain cross, with the upper-left and lower-right quarters bearing a crosshatched or diaper pattern, all within a beaded inner circle. The shield is rendered in the Gothic heraldic style typical of Westphalian ecclesiastical coinage of the mid-fourteenth century. A partial circular legend in uncial characters surrounds the shield within the beaded border. The flan is irregular and slightly off-centre, as is characteristic of hammered medieval denars.
