Additional information

Guillaume de Monthonay's tenure as Bishop of Lausanne coincided with the Western Schism, when competing papal claimants in Rome and Avignon fractured ecclesiastical authority across the Latin church. Lausanne's political alignment shifted uneasily during this period, and the bishop's right to strike coin — a privilege derived from imperial grant — was one of the few instruments of local authority that remained uncontested regardless of which pope a given prince-bishop chose to obey.

The HMZ reference places this among a tight cluster of Lausanne episcopal issues whose attribution relies heavily on die comparison rather than documentary record.
