Obverse description Head of the nymph Arethusa facing left, rendered in fine high relief in the tradition of the great Syracusan die engravers. Her elaborately dressed hair is bound with a decorated diadem and wheat ears, with richly curled locks falling about her neck and shoulders. A pearl drop earring adorns her ear, and a sprig of grain or floral ornament appears behind her neck. The ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ is inscribed along the left and lower periphery of the field.
