Obverse description Quadriga at full gallop to left, driven by a female charioteer leaning forward with a kentron (goad) extended in her right hand and the reins gathered in her left. Above at left, Nike flies rightward to crown the charioteer with a wreath. In the exergue, a panoply of arms displayed upon a pedestal bearing the inscription ΑΘΛΑ, denoting the prizes of the Syracusan games. The composition is rendered with exceptional dynamism characteristic of the finest Sicilian die-engraving of the late fifth century BC.
