Ferdinand of Bavaria held the see of Liège from 1612 until his death in 1650, simultaneously serving as Elector-Archbishop of Cologne — a plurality of offices that made him one of the most politically entangled ecclesiastical princes in the Holy Roman Empire. This daler was struck in 1646, three years after the Peace of Westphalia negotiations had begun at Münster and Osnabrück, in a region that had spent decades absorbing the military and economic shocks of the Thirty Years' War. Liège nominally maintained neutrality throughout the conflict, though that neutrality was repeatedly violated by passing armies.
The 40-patard denomination placed this piece at the upper end of the prince-bishopric's silver coinage hierarchy.
