Ferdinand of Bavaria became Prince-Bishop of Liège in 1612 through naked dynastic maneuvering — he was already Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, and accumulating Liège added another wealthy ecclesiastical territory to Wittelsbach control in the Lower Rhine region.
