Reverse description A boldly rendered rampant lion passant-guardant to the left occupies the central field, its mane elaborately detailed, holding an upright sword in its dexter forepaw and a bundle of arrows — the fasces of the Union of Utrecht — in its sinister forepaw, symbolising the unity of the Dutch provinces. The lion stands against an unadorned field within a beaded inner circle. The date 1579 is divided and placed at the top of the field, flanking the lion's head, while the surrounding Latin legend commemorating the Union of Utrecht runs clockwise along the periphery.
