Obverse description Central field features the crowned coat of arms of the city of Nijmegen, displaying the imperial eagle on a shield, flanked by elaborate Renaissance-style foliate and scrollwork ornamentation. The crowned shield is surmounted by a helmet with mantling rendered in fine relief, typical of 16th-century Netherlands municipal heraldry. A beaded inner border separates the central design from the circular Latin legend in the outer field. The legend reads NVMVS ARGEN REIPVBLICÆ NOVIMAGIEN, identifying the coin as the silver issue of the Republic of Nijmegen. The overall style is characteristic of hammered Low Countries municipal coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
