Middelburg, the principal city of Zeeland, held out for Spanish rule while the surrounding province fell to the Sea Beggars. By October 1574 the siege had stretched long enough that the garrison and citizens faced starvation — relief never came, and the city surrendered that same month. These coins were struck from melted silver plate and church valuables to pay troops and maintain some semblance of economic function inside the walls.
Siege coinage of this type was produced under the authority of the Spanish-loyalist municipal government, not the rebel States, which makes Middelburg an anomaly among Dutch siege issues of the Revolt.
