| Obverse description | Central device depicts a standing armored figure of the Zeeland maiden, shown in three-quarter view facing right, wearing a plumed helmet and a coat of arms over her armor, and holding an upright spear or lance in her right hand. She stands atop the provincial shield of Zeeland, which displays a lion rampant emerging from a barry wavy field, symbolizing the province's struggle against the sea. The circular Latin legend LUCTOR ET EMERGO, meaning 'I struggle and overcome,' runs along the inner border of the coin, separated by decorative rosette stops. The entire design is contained within a beaded outer rim characteristic of milled coinage of the Dutch Republic. |
