The Abbey of Thorn, in what is now the southern Netherlands, held the unusual status of an imperial abbey — a secular canoness foundation under direct Imperial authority, granting its abbess the right to strike coin. Margaret of Brederode held that position from 1561 until her death in 1577, and the daalder issues from her tenure are among the most substantial coins produced by any ecclesiastical mint in the Low Countries during the sixteenth century. The timing matters: 1570 falls squarely within the opening violence of the Dutch Revolt, when monetary authority in the region was actively contested.
