P. Carisius served as Augustus's legate in Hispania during the Cantabrian Wars, and these bronzes were struck in the field — almost certainly at an emergency military mint in Spain, possibly Emerita Augusta before that colony was formally established. The cut-half format was deliberate: the Roman monetary system had no bronze fractional denomination small enough for daily soldier pay disbursements, so halving the as created a semis equivalent on the spot. The cuts on genuine examples typically follow a straight, deliberate line rather than a jagged break, distinguishing authorized halving from casual damage.
