| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse presents a large plain cross of the Order of Christ occupying the central field, its squared terminals nearly reaching the inner beaded border. A beaded circle encloses the cross, outside of which runs the Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES in Gothic characters, the Constantinian motto meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer.' The legend is separated by pellet stops and distributed around the full circumference of the coin. The flat, slightly concave field and the bold relief of the cross are hallmarks of Portuguese hammered gold coinage of the reign of João III. |

João III's monetary reform of 1537 redefined the cruzado's fineness upward — a deliberate policy response to debasement pressures felt across the Iberian Peninsula as silver from the Americas began distorting established bimetallic ratios. This third-type emission from Lisboa was consequently short-lived, replaced within roughly a year as the Crown continued adjusting its gold coinage to remain competitive in Atlantic trade.
