| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal arms, a quartered shield displaying castles and spheres (quinas), surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate design. The mint marks R and L flank the shield at the lower left and right respectively, identifying the Lisbon mint. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the Latin legend IOANES III R PORT disposed around the periphery in Gothic lettering. The flan is irregular in outline, as characteristic of hammered coinage of this period. The overall execution reflects the refined heraldic style of the Manueline-to-Renaissance transitional period in Portuguese royal coinage. |
