Obverse description Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield displaying the five quinas (escutcheons) charged with bezants arranged in the form of a cross, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — all surmounted by an elaborate royal crown with fleur-de-lis finials and orb. The denomination numeral 400 appears to the left of the shield and the date to the right, flanked by small rosette ornaments at the four cardinal points of the legend. The circular Latin legend, reading clockwise, identifies the sovereign as PETRVS II by the grace of God King of Portugal.
